Restless from having spent his entire life under strict rules on an isolated island, thirteen-year-old Leokles turns to breaking the law. He yearns to explore the rest of the planet Nemesyne, but war thwarted this dream and took his father from him before he was even born. 
 
Leokles finally gets his chance at freedom once he is invited aboard a ship with voyagers from all over the planet, including a strong-willed girl and her unusual companion who keep crossing the line between friends and rivals. When Leokles isn’t being abducted by sea creatures, surviving raging storms, or sparring in combat with his new friends, his curiosity drives him to make covert trips into the locked spaces of the voyaging ship. 
 
But when his usual talents of stealth and persuasion have no effect on the ship’s surly first mate and he finds himself constantly getting into trouble, Leokles’s newfound freedom is threatened. He must learn to embrace the mysteries surrounding his father’s death in order to save his voyage and, most importantly, save his friends.
